Jammu and Kashmir government employee hides in BJP candidate’s clothing

SRINAGAR: A candidate nominated by BJP for J&K’s first District Development Council polls has turned out to be a government employee posted in the motor garages department.
Showkat Ahmad Wani, who is contesting the election from Beerwah constituency in central Kashmir’s Budgam, was suspended on Friday after it was confirmed that he had taken leave from work citing personal reasons and filed his nomination on a BJP ticket in violation of the model code of conduct.
Nobody from BJP was available in Srinagar to clarify if the party knew Wani was a government employee or had verified his credentials before handing him a ticket to contest the polls.
Budgam district is going to polls in the third of eight phases of voting across 20 districts, beginning Saturday.
