JRSU becomes 1st university in Jharkhand to start physical classes

RANCHI: The Jharkhand Raksha Shakti University (JRSU) has become the first educational institute in the state to begin physical classes since the Covid-19 lockdown began in March.

University officials said the conventional mode of classes began with 40% attendance since Monday and the students are enthusiastic on their return to the campus.

The percentage is expected to improve soon as the outstation students are yet to return, they said adding that a total of 480 students, including 200 newly enrolled ones, are studying in the institute.

Notably, the University Grants Commission, in its Covid safety guidelines, gave universities across the country the option to start online or offline classes from November 2 as per the convenience of their students and teachers. Thereafter, JRSU sent a proposal to the state government informing about their plans to begin offline classes, the officials said.

JRSU registrar Colonel (retd) Rajesh Kumar said, “A significant section of our students were not satisfied with the online classes as they faced connectivity problems. Being a new university with a relatively less number of students, we felt confident to start the offline classes safely. As a defence university, we also follow a different code of ethics for safety and discipline.”

Kumar stressed that the classes were started after giving prior information to the state education department.

To keep the virus at bay, the university has implemented a host of measures, including social distancing, wearing of masks, use of sanitizer and thermal scanning of the students. The spacious laboratories are utilised for classes to ensure social distancing and the number of classes has been increased while the lunch period has been reduced by an hour. The students were also segregated according to their courses to regulate their presence on the campus. The university officials said they would review the physical classes after some time to decide on their continuation.
