Fatima: Learnt to use the console to play a DJ

Actors are often seen taking up the challenge of learning a new skill for the character that they have to portray on screen. It involves anything from learning a new language, dance form, martial arts or even a musical instrument. For her role in Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari, Fatima Sana Shaikh got a chance to try her hand at something that’s rather hatke. The actress, who plays an aspiring DJ in the film, learnt the art of using the music console for her role in the comic caper.
In the film directed by Abhishek Sharma, Manoj Bajpayee owns a wedding detective agency that runs background checks on prospective grooms, while Fatima plays his sister, and Diljit Dosanjh takes on the role of his nemesis. For her role as Tulsi, a fiery Maharashtrian girl from the 90s who secretly aspires to be a DJ, Fatima met musicians and DJs to understand their journey. The actress says, “It was important to stay authentic to the character. I learnt how to use the console and scratch the disk when on stage. A large part of the prep included internalising her experiences.”

Though Fatima’s character belongs to a Maharashtrian family that’s rooted in traditional values in the movie, she has a rebellious streak in her. Even as the world expects her to be docile, she is a disrupter ready to chart her own path. The actress says, “Tulsi belongs to a traditional home, but dreams of breaking free. Her music is the wind beneath her wings. I am glad that Abhishek thought I could do justice to the character. I hope she resonates with women across the country who are chasing their dreams.”
