Meher Vij came up with noteworthy performances in ‘Secret Superstar‘, ‘Bhoot- Part One: The Haunted Ship’ and ‘Special OPS’. Before that, we noticed her in ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ and way back in 2009, in the TV show ‘Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil’. But do you know it hasn’t been easy for her in this glamour world, which looks so easy and free-flowing from the outside?
Meher, our third guest on #HowIMadeIt after Neeraj Kabi and Arjun Mathur, did not bat an eyelid to any questions asked about her journey so far.
“I wanted instant fame and money,” Meher began rather honestly, hinting that she knew that if she could become a household name with ‘Kis Desh Mein Hai Mera Dil’, she would have won half her battle. It hadn’t been easy for Meher after her debut in ‘Saaya’ (2003) starring John Abraham, went unnoticed. And then soon, she was in a lull before she worked with Salman Khan in ‘Lucky: No Time For Love’.
Mujhe laga mujhe acting aati hi nahi
You cannot quite blame her if she felt that she wouldn’t look back after that. ‘Lucky: No Time For Love’ (2005) was a Salman Khan-led movie. However, Meher lost out on the heroine’s role as Sneha Ullal came in. “I was supposed to do Sneha Ullal’s role but later I was told that they had cast somebody else instead.”
But the pretty youngster had a big battle ahead, a battle that can break people into pieces. Meher’s mother was diagnosed with blood cancer, and to foot the bills, she says, “I had to continue working in TV serials. But honestly, I was bored of television. I wanted to do movies. I wanted to get into different characters.” Add this to the fact that, “I was facing rejections in auditions. Mujhe laga mujhe acting aati hi nahi.”
Kabir Khan wanted to know if the mole under my eye is real or fake!
While Meher got in smoothly into ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, she says that her entry into ‘Secret Superstar’ required her to audition as many as nine times. Meher almost lost her patience before the director Advait Chandan finally told her that she was on board. Interestingly, ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ director Kabir Khan wanted to know before casting her, “if the mole under her eye is true or fake,” Meher says in a rather bindaas manner.
I had to leave Mumbai after ‘Secret Superstar’
The biggest hurdle that Meher has had to cross in her 17-year journey so far was that she started getting very similar roles, especially after ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ and ‘Secret Superstar’, which needed her to play the intense, brooding mother. “You know what? I tend to get too much into the character. I had to go away from Mumbai for about 45 days after I did ‘Secret Superstar’; I was still not being myself, though the film had got over in all respects,” she says.
I am living my mother’s dream
A thing that slowed Meher down was her mother’s ailment. The 31-year-old actress had to say ‘no’ to certain roles kyunki in her early days she says, “I wanted to look after my mother. I know it led to some gaps in my career. Actually, she wanted to be an actor. I sometimes feel that I am living my mom’s dream.”
Naturally, the mother comes first. Think of it, almost each one of us is quite confused today and forced to prioritise things in his /her life, isn’t it so?
Meher also tells ETimes about her first meeting with Salman Khan and Aamir Khan. Salman didn’t remember that he had worked with Mehr in ‘Lucky: No Time For Love’ when they reunited during the shoot of ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’. Meher went up to Salman and told him about it and he not only listened with rapt attention but asked her some more questions as well. This made her comfortable.
Aamir Khan enacted my scenes in ‘Secret Superstar’ and showed me how to do them!
Meher’s meeting with Aamir was equally chilled. “Aamir used to show me how to do some of my scenes by first enacting them himself,” she said.
Aamir, they call you Mr Perfectionist for a reason! And Meher agrees with us when we tell her that we won’t be surprised if Aamir was seeing her auditions at every step and that’s the reason why she was called 9 times. “Even I wouldn’t be surprised. Maybe Aamir sir was looking for that nuance of emotion which would lead him to select me,” she says. That man wants to hit the nail on the head every time. And why not? Look at his success ratio!
Back to Meher. She says, “‘As I told you earlier, I had started refusing repetitive roles. In that vein, I refused a Vidhu Vinod Chopra film. That the film did not get made is a different story.”
Now that she has made it after adding ‘Bhoot- Part One: The Haunted Ship’ and the web show ‘Special OPS’ which made her creatively happy, Meher is all set to sign a big film very soon, which she reveals, “Will start in February. The modalities are being worked out,” Meher concludes.
