Maharashtra’s proposed ‘Shakti Act’: Key provisions

NEW DELHI: The Maharashtra state cabinet on Wednesday approved a draft bill to curb heinous crimes against women and children in the state.
The draft bill once passed by the state legislature will be called the “Shakti Act“.
It has provisions for stringent punishment, including death penalty, life sentence and hefty fines for the perpetrators. It also seeks to ensure speedy trial of cases.
The draft bill seeks to amend relevant sections of the IPC, CrPC and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for the proposed law’s application in the state.
Here are some of the key features of the proposed legislation:
The draft bill will be tabled in the state legislature during the upcoming winter session, which begins in Mumbai from December 14. After getting the house nod, the bill will be sent to the Central government for approval and Presidential assent.
